About Axis Nifty500 Low Volatility 50 Index Fund
Axis Nifty500 Low Volatility 50 Index Fund is an open-ended passive equity scheme tracking the Nifty 500 Low Volatility 50 TRI. It invests in 50 stocks selected from the Nifty 500 based on their historical price volatility.
Investment Objective
The scheme seeks to provide returns, before expenses, corresponding to the performance of the Nifty 500 Low Volatility 50 TRI, subject to tracking error. Returns are not guaranteed.
Benchmark Explained
The Nifty 500 Low Volatility 50 TRI selects relatively stable stocks from the broader Nifty 500 universe. Constituents with lower historical volatility receive representation under the index methodology.
The TRI version includes dividends, making it a more comprehensive performance benchmark than a price-return index.
Benchmark Performance
Low-volatility strategies have historically aimed to limit fluctuations and provide better downside resilience than broad-market indices. However, they may underperform when high-beta, cyclical and momentum stocks lead a strong market rally.
Sahifund Interpretation: The benchmark can produce a relatively smoother investment journey, but it remains exposed to equity-market losses. “Low volatility” should not be interpreted as “low risk.”
Fund Managers
Nandik Mallik holds qualifications from IIM Calcutta and London Business School. His experience includes Axis Mutual Fund, Avendus Capital, ICICI Prudential AMC, Edelweiss AMC, Credit Suisse and BNP Paribas.
Rohit Gautam is an IIT Bombay and IIM Ahmedabad alumnus with previous experience at IndiaFirst Life Insurance, Shriram AMC and Greater Pacific Capital.
Sahifund Interpretation: Both managers have strong academic and investment backgrounds. However, their primary responsibility in this passive scheme is accurate index replication, efficient rebalancing and controlling tracking error.
Principal Risk Factors
- Equity-market risk
- Factor underperformance
- Tracking error
- Portfolio concentration in low-volatility stocks
- Model-based selection risk
- Rebalancing risk
Final Sahifund Verdict
The fund offers diversified, rules-based exposure to relatively less-volatile stocks. It may suit investors seeking smoother equity participation, but it can lag during momentum-led rallies. Use it as a complementary factor allocation rather than the sole core equity holding.
Sahifund Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.5/5)
Recommendation: Consider through SIP with a five-year horizon.
