Sahifund Verdict:
Since this is a thematic / sector-specific ETF (energy), it’s inherently more risky than a broad-market fund. If the energy sector under-performs (due to commodity prices, regulation, shift to renewables etc), the fund will suffer.
Energy stocks often swing widely based on commodity prices (oil, gas, coal), global demand/supply shocks, regulatory/tax changes. So returns may be more volatile.
Although it aims to replicate the index, in practice there will be expenses, trading costs, cash drag etc which can cause the ETF to underperform the index by a bit.
The Index invests in companies like Reliance Industries, ONGC, Coal India, NTPC, Powergrid etc.
The Index has given Total Return of 15.44% since inception, 18.42% in the last five years and -20.49% in the last one year.
This fund can be compared to the ICICI Prudential Nifty Oil & Gas ETF which is also a passive ETF.
Whereas the Baroda BNP Paribas Energy Opportunites Fund which is an active thematic fund.
The Mirae Asset Nifty Energy ETF gives you a passive, transparent way into the energy sector, with clearer benchmark, manageable structure.
